2025 Photography Ins & Outs

As we say goodbye to 2024 and welcome in 2025 there are a few things photography wise that i’d love to kick out and a few things i’d love to welcome in to make 2025 the best year yet. Here we go!

  1. OUT - Perfectionism

Now as someone who started learning photography about 10 years ago it was all about rule of thirds, composition, focus etc - getting it ‘right’ really is what it came down too to create the ‘perfect photo’. Well to hell with that! In the last few years we’ve seen trends of blurred images, quirky angles, off points of focus. It’s not to say that I will become a lazy photographer who doesnt care but I mean I want to focus more on what’s happening in the moment rather then having everything ‘right’. Let’s capture a moment for exactly what it is.

2. IN - Flash!

I have come to love using flash on a wedding day! There is a time and place for it but I definitely think it can add something to a set up and ultimately the final look. It can also add a bit of creativity and variety to your wedding gallery. Now im not talking big soft box lights and lots of gadgets. There are some photographers who do this really well but it’s just not me. But a flash on top of my camera can definitely create some cool effects.

3. OUT - Linen

Now here me out, linens are really timeless and when you look back on family photos in 10 years you cant really go wrong with linen. It’s flattering, doesnt distract or take away from the main subject (you) and is easy to find for everyone in the family. It is a really easy go to if you have no idea what else to wear (I have definitely been there!!!) BUT, my only gripe with linen is, well, does it represent you? Is it something you’d wear in your life? Instead of dressing a certain way just because it’s what we are seeing on instagram, why dont we just choose clothes that we love and adore? Something that represents you and who you are! So that when you look back at the photos in 20 years you can say “I used to love that dress!”

4. IN - Posing (Or maybe out?)

Thinking of weddings here again - the old cliche ‘lets stand behind a row of trees and stick our heads out’ is still out I PROMISE! Definitely not bringing that one back. But there are actually some really cool editorial ways to pose or be posed. It’s not about being stiff or ridgid but more about taking the time to set up something cool to create an epic shot. For example all posed on a couch or across the field or using paper umbrellas or laying on the bed for the pre ceremony portraits with cute magazines. Shots that take a little more thought but end up with a really cool result.

This definitely isn’t something I do all day but is something fun we can do for a couple of shots expecially in the wedding party and couple photos. The rest of the day is 99% documentary.

5. IN - Writing the f*cking blog

I have been SO slack on blogging but the truth is there is so many amazing things to share and not enough time to share it all. I’m one little duck sitting on the pond paddling as fast as she can building the business of my dreams. I actually really love writing so let’s hope I can blog more this year

What do you want to see from me in 2025? x
